SystemX exhibited alongside the metropolis of Lyon at the Smart City Expo World Congress which took place 14–16 November 2017 in Barcelona. With almost 19,000 attendees, the seventh edition of the event was a resounding success. Lionel Scremin, Director of the SystemX@Lyon site, looks back.

Why did the IRT SystemX exhibit at the Smart City Expo World Congress?

In just a few years, the Smart City Expo World Congress has established itself as the leading international event for smart cities. We wanted to come for the second year running and show the work carried out as part of the Smart Territories research program. In particular, we showed visitors the technological challenges that the IRT SystemX is addressing – in the blockchain, energy and mobility domains.
What was special about the 2017 edition was that we were a co-exhibitor on the Greater Lyon stand, having recently opened a facility in the city.

What does the Institute do in Lyon?

The IRT SystemX opened a facility on the Lyon Tech-la-Doua campus in September. This new site, which brings together almost 2,000 researchers, offers unique scientific and technological potential for testing innovative new use cases. In collaboration with regional stakeholders, we will be focusing on two major areas of research: the Smart City (new multimodal and predictive mobility, sharing urban space, the passenger and driver experience in mobility, data and energy, smart grids) and the Factory of the Future (IoT and industrial system cybersecurity, digital supply chain of new industrial processes such as additive manufacturing).

How is the SystemX Lyon site likely to develop in the next few years?

In the short term, i.e. in early 2018, we will be launching an initial project on the theme of smart territories. The aim is to develop decision-support tools to harness urban data.
By 2020, fifty full-time equivalent employees (FTEs) will be working on research projects at the Doua site. Specifically, we expect to recruit twenty research engineers on site who will supervise and lead the projects carried out in situ using the resources of industrial, academic and local authority partners.
