SystemX welcomed Jean-Daniel Fekete Tuesday 1 July from 14h to 15h30 at Nano-Innov (amphi 34, N2 building) for a seminar on ” Information visualization to understand and interact with data”.
Summary
For the last decade, information visualization (also called data visualization) has been becoming popular in a variety of areas such as “business intelligence”, the analysis of social networks, data journalism, etc. Beyond the excitement it arouses, one should ask oneself whether or not if the display is so useful and effective, if its implementation is easy, and what are its limitations. I will discuss these questions using examples of our perceptual capacities to explain how to use the data. Mostly I will discuss the learning problem that conditions the usable technics and their efficiency, always through concrete examples.
Biography
Jean-Daniel Fekete is Director of Research of INRIA (DR1). He received his PhD from the Université Paris-Sud in 1996 and joined the graphics team at the Ecole des Mines de Nantes, in 1997, where he took over responsibilities from 2000 to 2001. The Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory of the University of Maryland in the USA invited him in 2001-2002. He was then recruited by INRIA in 2002 as a confirmed researcher (CR1) and was promoted to Director of Research in 2006. He is currently the team leader of the AVIZ project – project that he created in 2007. His areas of research include: Analytical Visualization, Information Visualization and Human-Computer Interaction. He works or has worked on numerous projects with Microsoft Research, Google, IBM, EDF, France Telecom, and several SMEs.
Jean-Daniel is the President of the IEEE VIS 2014 conference, which will be held for the first time in its history outside of the U.S.A, in Paris, France. Jean-Daniel Fekete was the president of the French Association of Human Computer Interaction (AFIHM) up to 2013 and associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). He is part of the Monitoring Committee of the IEEE InfoVis and EUROVIS conferences. He was the President of the IEEE InfoVis conference in 2011, co-responsible for the 2011 IEEE Pacific Visualization Conference articles.
